Always take the person seriously

You should always take the person with dementia seriously by identifying their needs and addressing those needs thoughtfully. Research has shown this develops trust, promotes an increased ability to function and minimises feelings of isolation and devaluation that can be evident in a person with dementia.

If you are living or working around a person with dementia you should avoid conversations about the person with dementia – especially within their hearing distance, no matter how advanced their dementia may seem to be. You should endeavour to include them in any conversation that addresses their needs, even if they are unable to contribute in any meaningful way.
